Our Service Projects

The Christ Child Society offers a series of programs to support children in need throughout the Milwaukee Metropolitan area. These programs include the Layette Program, the My Stuff Bag Program, Outreach Services, Supportive Aides Program, and Scholarships. With this breadth of service, we can reach newborns through teens in a variety of ways. Below you will find a brief synopsis of each of our service programs. Please contact the Christ Child Society for more details at 414-540-0489.

    Layette Program
Since 1948, the Christ Child Society's Milwaukee Chapter has provided needy newborns in the greater Milwaukee area with a complete layette - a handmade blanket or quilt, an undershirt, 2 sleep and play outfits, a sweater set, a receiving blanket, diapers, socks, onesies, a storybook, a handmade toy, a shaken baby informational pamphlet, and an invitation to our Outreach/Second Saturday Program. All Christ Child Society members are encouraged to participate by knitting sweaters, bonnets and booties, hemming blankets, sewing handmade quilts or donating items needed in the Layette Program. Note: each of these layettes costs approximately $175 to assemble.

These layettes are the signature program of all CCS Chapters throughout the nation. Society members buy supplies, knit or sew clothing, and make blankets, sweaters and toys. They also seek out and accept layette donations from the community. Society members then meet to assemble these items into layettes, and distribute them to hospitals and social service agencies throughout the greater Milwaukee area.

Each year we distribute almost 2000 layettes to less fortunate infants through participating area hospitals and social service agencies in the greater Milwaukee area.

    "My Stuff" Bag Program
Concerned about the children who have been removed from homes because of abuse, neglect or natural disaster, Society members initiated the "My Stuff" Bag Project.

Our members purchase, collect and make items for the "My Stuff" Bags which are filled with essential items for the young: 1 pair of pajamas, 2 pair of socks, 2 shirts, 2 pair of underpants, toothbrush and toothpaste, hair brush or comb or hair decoration, and a small stuffed toy. We provide these necessities in a canvas bag that the child owns (even with a spot for their own name on it) as a tool to empower them. Note: Even with frugal shopping, each of these bags is costly to assemble.

The bags are given to social service agencies for distribution to children in crisis. They bring comfort to children placed in difficult situations and remind them that someone does care.

Each year we distribute over 900 "My Stuff" bags through many social service agencies in the Greater Milwaukee area. Many more could be distributed if more funds were available.

    "Second Saturday" Outreach Services
Society members plan and conduct Second Saturday, an outreach program for young mothers and their children which meets on the second Saturday of the month from September through June.

At Second Saturday, Christ Child Society volunteers are challenging poverty one child at a time by encouraging literacy and working with mothers to be the best they can be. A variety of educational and recreational programs are provided. A lending library is available as well as a volunteer pediatrician we call "The Doctor is in The Corner". Lunch is provided. For meeting dates, please contact the Christ Child Society at 414-540-0489.

    Supportive Aides
Society members volunteer throughout the school year as tutors and supportive aides at a local elementary school. They help and encourage children to become better students and assist teachers in many ways. For example, the Christ Child Society has provided within this school:
    • Computers, software and Smartboards for each classroom
    • Internet connection for each classroom
    • Books and materials to update the school's library
    • Books and school supplies to needy children
    • Funds for an 8th grade retreat
    • Funds to enable teachers to become more computer literate

Through these gifts, the Christ Child Society hopes to create an environment that cultivates in their students a love of learning. The goal is to improve math, reading skills and self-esteem.
